Waterbury Hospital Pharmacy Program

Waterbury Hospital is a private, non-profit, acute care teaching hospital licensed for 367 beds and affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine, the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Founded in 1890 as Waterbury’s first and Connecticut’s fourth hospital, Waterbury Hospital is a full-service community health care institution with centers of excellence in primary care, behavioral health and orthopaedics. The Pharmacy Department is highly automated and comprised of approximately 50 staff members. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and provides decentral and clinical services during the day shifts.

PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program

Waterbury Hospital currently offers a PGY-1 clinical Pharmacy Residency Program and is pending accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists(ASHP) with two resident positions available each year. The hospital also participates in the Resident Match Program.

Mission

The mission of the PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program is
to be clinically focused and to share responsibility for the optimal outcome of a patient’s drug therapy -- in collaboration with physicians, staff, patients and family -- while providing cost effective, outcome-based pharmacoeconomic pharmaceutical care to patients across the health care continuum.
 

PGY-1 Residency Program

The program consists of a one-year period of concentrated training in all aspects of pharmacy practice. The residency program is flexible, allowing the resident to maximally individualize the experience within the framework of ASHP accreditation guidelines.  Learning activities for each of the rotations will accommodate the resident’s previous experiences and current goals, as well as satisfying the ASHP PGY-1 Required Outcomes.

The program is of a general, clinical nature and will provide the working knowledge and experience that will enable the resident to assume a leadership role in pharmacy practice. The goal of training is to develop the resident's independent practice skills and confidence in a variety of general practice and specialty areas. Rotation schedules and assignments are flexible and allow for extra time in areas of interest. Residents have an opportunity to develop teaching skills as the program focuses on the development of knowledge, skills, and behaviors required for the successful provision of pharmaceutical care in the ambulatory and inpatient settings.

Residency Rotations
The 12-month residency is divided into required and elective rotations:

     
 Required Rotations

  • Orientation (four weeks)

  • Internal Medicine (eight weeks)

  • Critical Care (eight weeks)

  • Infectious Diseases (six weeks)

  • Cardiology (four weeks)

  • Pulmonary (four weeks)

  • Ambulatory Care (longitudinal) 

Elective Rotations

  • Pharmacy Administration

  • Hematology/Oncology

  • Emergency Medicine

Residency Benefits

The resident will be entitled to all of the same benefits provided to full time Clinical Pharmacists at Waterbury Hospital.

Interviews

Interviews are an integral part of the hospital’s evaluation of potential residents, and the expectation is that serious applicants will want to evaluate the clinical site as well.
