Shoulder replacement surgery is an option for treatment of
severe arthritis of the
shoulder joint.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of shoulder arthritis. Also
called wear-and-tear arthritis or degenerative joint disease, it
is characterized by progressive wearing away of the cartilage of
the joint. As the protective cartilage is worn away, bare bone is
exposed within the joint.
The other type of shoulder arthritis that is not uncommon is
rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic condition
that causes an inflammation of the lining of a joint. This
inflammation can, over time, invade and destroy the cartilage and
bone.
Shoulder arthritis typically affects patients over 50 years of
age. It is more common in patients who have a history of prior
shoulder injury.
There is also a genetic predisposition of this condition, meaning
shoulder arthritis tends to run in families.
Severe shoulder arthritis is quite painful, and can cause
restriction of motion. While this may be tolerated with
some medications and
lifestyle adjustments, there may come a time when surgical
treatment is necessary.
Surgery in this case probably means shoulder replacement -- total
or partial. With your orthopaedic physician, you will discuss
which shoulder replacement operation my be best for you. |
