Waterbury Hospital Volunteer Named a Community “MVP” by
the New England Patriots Foundation
WATERBURY – Velma Sego of Naugatuck, who has
volunteered her time and energy to Waterbury Hospital
for over 19 years, was one of 21 volunteers from
non-profit organizations across the New England area to
be recognized as a “Community MVP” by the New England
Patriots Foundation during a ceremony at Gillette
Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., last month.
Sego,
69, and the other award recipients were honored at a May
27 ceremony in which they had an opportunity to meet New
England Patriots owner Robert Kraft as well as Patriots
Head Coach Bill Belichick and current and former players
such as Kevin Faulk and Andre Tippett. Sego and the
other award recipients also had their photos taken with
Mr. Kraft and the players while being lauded for their
dedication to volunteerism.
Sego
was recognized for the more than 19,000 hours of
volunteer service she has given to the hospital over the
years. A retired waitress and cashier, she regularly
shows up at the hospital before 7 a.m. to provide
assistance to the hospital’s Dietary Services and
Medical Records departments before leaving at 2:30 p.m.
She routinely volunteers more than 35 hours a week.
Sego
said she was honored to be recognized with the award,
which also included a $2,500 donation from the Patriots
Foundation to support the mission of Waterbury Hospital.
“I
don’t do this for any kind of recognition,” Sego said.
“I just do it because it’s something I like to do.”
